Based on a popular comic book series, Ratner’s film suggests that for all his strength and courage, Herc is actually a mercenary warrior who uses inflated tales of his godly parentage and epic feats to intimidate his enemies. In this particular adventure, he’s hired, along with his half-dozen comrades, to defend the kingdom of Thrace from an evil warlord and his possibly supernatural army; a task they accomplish only to discover that things aren’t as simple as they’d been led to believe.

Hercules is by no measure a great film. Hell, I’d even be cautious to call it a good film. The suspect CGI and cheesy costumes break the spell all too often, but it’s such a cheerfully ridiculous take on Hercules myth that it’s nearly irresistible. The film is knowingly doofy and hits every rung of the standard action adventure, but does so with such a spirited commitment to the material and swashbuckling sense of fun, it’s hard not to buy into its legend.

The film takes place in ancient Greece, where Hercules is already an established hero. He has his comrades-in-arms, played by Rufus Sewell, Ian Mcshane, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal and Aksel Hennie. Together, they are a band for hire and with their blades, they play a merry tune. Now, Hercules is in exile, living out his days. He gets called back for one mission where the payday is huge. He has to hunt down a warlord and save the kingdom of Thrace. This is where Hercules has to decide whether he has what it takes to become the legend.
