Amitabh Bachchan and Tapsee Pannu starrer Badla hit the theaters today. The movie is made under the production of Shaharukh Khan’s Red chillies production. This is the second appearance of Amitabh and Taapsee together after the movie Pink.

A slavish remake of the 2017 Spanish thriller Contratiempo (The Invisible Guest), Ghosh’s efficiently assembled film keeps tension at a boil through twist and counter-twist, but the finalé is easy to see coming, principally because we expect certain actors to have the last laugh. Still, there is something to be said for this briskly paced thriller that doesn’t slow down to spoon-feed its audience. Badla never loses grip.

Since revenge stories are literally done-to-death in cinema, crafting a smart thriller around the same old saga requires smart execution and tactfulness. Director Sujoy Ghosh’s Badla delivers solid thrills and some genuine twists with great effect.

BADLA is the story of a murder accused trying to prove her innocence. Naina Sethi (Taapsee Pannu) is a successful businesswoman in London and married with a daughter. Her life turns around when she’s accused of murdering her lover, Arjun Joseph (Tony Luke). All evidences are against Naina since she was the only one in the hotel room where Arjun was killed. She claims a third person was present who carried out the murder and even hurt her on the forehead. But the preliminary investigations revealed that the room was locked from inside.

The references to Lord Krishna, Arjuna, Draupadi, Dhritarashtra and Sanjaya are made in the course of the film’s central encounter between a retired advocate (Amitabh Bachchan) who has never lost a case in a 40-year career and an out-on-bail murder suspect (Taapsee Pannu), a hotshot businesswoman who has reason to believe that she is being implicated in a crime she hasn’t committed.
