Feb 13, 2025

Netflix has unveiled its 2025 lineup of Japanese films and series, featuring a diverse array of period dramas, action-packed thrillers, and compelling unscripted content. A standout in this collection is the period series “Last Samurai Standing,” directed by Michihito Fujii, Kento Yamaguchi, and Toru Yamamoto. Set during the decline of the samurai era, the narrative centers on 292 warriors invited to a deadly competition for a substantial cash reward. Junichi Okada leads the cast in this adaptation of Shogo Imamura’s novel “Ikusagami,” which has also been transformed into a well-received manga series.

Another notable addition is “Asura,” directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Released in February 2025, this series is set in 1979 and delves into the lives of four sisters—Tsunako, Makiko, Takiko, and Sakiko—whose world is upended upon discovering their elderly father’s affair.

Returning for its third season is the acclaimed sci-fi thriller “Alice in Borderland.” Based on Haro Aso’s manga, the story follows Arisu as he navigates a parallel universe where survival hinges on winning perilous games. The emergence of the Joker card signals a new chapter in this gripping series.

In the realm of feature films, “Bullet Train Explosion” stands out. Directed by Shinji Higuchi, this action thriller is a remake of Junya Sato’s 1975 classic “The Bullet Train,” which partially inspired the 1994 film “Speed.” Notably, the production collaborated with the East Japan Railway Company, allowing for authentic bullet train sequences.

Netflix’s 2025 Japanese slate underscores its commitment to delivering diverse and engaging content, catering to a wide range of viewer preferences.
