Oscar-Nominated Actress Karla Sofia Gascon Deactivates X After Controversial Tweets Resurface; Zoe Saldana Speaks Out

Feb 02, 2025

Karla Sofia Gascon, star of Emilia Perez, has deactivated her X (formerly Twitter) account after past controversial posts from 2020 and 2021 resurfaced, igniting backlash.

Reacting to the controversy, co-star Zoe Saldana expressed her disappointment during a London Q&A session, calling the situation “really sad.” She admitted she was still processing the revelations but emphasized her firm stance against bigotry: “I don’t support it, and I have zero tolerance for any negative rhetoric toward any group.”

Saldana reflected on her experience filming Emilia Perez, describing it as one rooted in inclusivity, collaboration, and cultural equity.

Among Gascon’s resurfaced tweets was a 2021 post criticizing the diversity of the Oscars, where she wrote: “More and more, the #Oscars feel like a festival for independent and protest films. I wasn’t sure if I was watching an Afro-Korean event, a Black Lives Matter protest, or 8M. On top of that, it was an ugly, ugly gala.”

The backlash ultimately led to Gascon’s exit from X, while Saldana made it clear she stands firmly against discrimination.
