Director Tony D’souza’s AZHAR brilliantly captures the angst, the simplicity, the colossal success, the dual romance, tryst with infamy and an arduous innings of never ending struggle-to-clear-the-name of Indian cricket’s heroic, yet arguably the most controversial captain Mohammad Azharuddin. Everyone was wondering as to how would the makers of AZHAR present his highly scrutinized and well-known public-personal life..

To be fair, Hashmi had a tough job ahead of him. He was playing a man who was accused of corruption and letting down millions of his fans. Nargis Fakhri, who plays Azharuddin’s second wife, is abysmal in her role. Her seductress act, liberally sprinkled with pouts and wide eyes, is a turn off. Desai is perfectly cast as the demure first wife. When there’s an opportunity to expose the underbelly of the cricketing game, why did the director focus on Azhar’s limp personal life?
